Haij is one of the five pillars of Islam. The yearly flood of pilgrims from the remotest places of Islam has been a remarkable means of spiritual renewal for distant communities, which are thus brought closer to the manifest center of Islam. Historically, the pilgrimage has been a means of knitting together the many races and nations that make the Muslim community, and there is no other event on earth that can compare with it.
There are three ways of performing the Hajj Haj at-Tamatt’u (Interrupted) This means entering into Ahram for the Umrah aking it off after performing the Umrah, and hen entering into Ahram again for the Haij People who come from other countries usually perform Haj at-Tamatt’u. Hajj al-Qiran (Combined) This means entering into Ahram for both the Umrah and the Hajj at the same time, not taking off the Ahram until the day of sacrifice at Mina. Hajj al-Ifrad (Single) This means enter ng into Ahram only for the Haij.
The Ibaadah of Haij has the exclusive status of being obligatory only once a lifetime, for those who can afford it. It is, therefore, important that the sincerity of intention must be given due regard. In other Ibaadaat and devotions, it is possible to gradually develop devotion, whereas the time available for Haji is usually limited. The need for devotion is vital because a Fard Haj can never be repeated. During your journey to Haij, a concerted effort towards developing this all-important sincerity must be made n thetical the s of slim it. The person who intends to perform Hajj must do so with the express intention of attaining Allah’s pleasure, and fulfill one’s fard, and also to diligently carry out the commands of Allah and His Messenger (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam). The rewards for deeds depend greatly on the intention that is formed. Sincerity is extremely important. It is important that Hajj should be kept free of ulterior and worldly motives. There are three types of adulterations which are possible in the performance of Haij.     To ruin the Haj even before departing from home by having a desire to be called a Haji and using haraam or doubtful earnings for this Ibaadah. To engage in improper acts while performing Haji, such as committing sins during the time that one is engaged in the performance of Haj, to have arguments, not to make Taubah (repentance) complete the Haj and then to indulge in such deeds that defile the Haj, e.g. to neglect the obligatory salaat, to indulge in sin, etc. Perform the Hajj with all its requisites, for anything done in keeping with this is well accomplished. While in Hajj do not do things to display to others. On returning from Hajj do not emphasize the difficulties which may have been endured, instead turn your attention towards the eternal benefits and rewards you will receive. One must understand that the difficulties endured during this sacred journey are insignificant compared to the high position one will receive in Paradise. When departing from home, the only intention in the heart should be the search for Allah’s Pleasure. All other evil intentions, as for example to show people or to wish to be called a Haji or the intention of having an enjoyable tour, should be completely removed from the mind.
One must be a Muslim. One must be an adult. One must be sane. A woman must travel with her husband or a Mahram (a man she cannot marry at all). The pilgrim should have sufficient money for his journey as well as for his dependents whom he leaves at home Hajj is obligatory upon those who can make their way” to Makkah. That is to say that the requirement is not absolute but incumbent upon those whose health and means permit it, and who in doing so, do not compromise their responsibilities towards their families Hajj relates to the life of tests and trials lived by Prophet Hazrat Ibrahim (Alaihissalam) and his son Prophet Hazrat Ismail (Alaihissalam) in the vicinity of Makkah. The most important factor of Haij is the intention to perform the Hajj only to please Allah and fulfill His command. It should not be mixed up with slightest worldly interest.
Before leaving for the Journey for Hajj make your conscience feel that you are going for Hajj because Allah the Almighty is pleased with you and has paved the way for you to perform Hajj Perform Ghusl and wear the Ahram clothes. Perform Wudu and offer these Nafl Namaaz: (1) 2 raka’at Shukrana Nafl (2) 2 raka’at Nafl-e-Tauba (3) 2 raka’at Nafl-e-Haajaat. (4) 2 raka’at Nafl-e-Safar (5) 2 raka’at Nafl with the intention of Umrah Ahram Give alms (Sadaqa) and request your neighbors, friends, and relatives to excuse you for your shortcomings and misbehavior towards them. While stepping out of the house recite this du’a: BIS-MIL-LAA-HI WA BIL-LAA-HI WA TA-WAK-KAL-TU A-LAL-LAA-HI WA LAA HAV-LA WA LAA QUV-VA-TAIL LAA BIL-LAH AL-LAA-HUM-MA IN- NAA NA-00-zU-BI-KA MIN AN NA- ZIL-LA AV NU-ZAL-LA AV NA-DIL-LA AV NU-DAL-LA AV NAZ-LA-MA AV NUZ-LA-MA AV NAJ-HA-LA AV YAJ- HA-LA A-LAI-NAA A-HAD With the name of Allah and with the help of Allah and I trusted Allah, there is no power and might except Allah. One should not indulge in unnecessary talk At the time of leaving the home one should think that he is leaving the world. Before leaving the home one should recite this du’a:ALLAAHUMMA INNAA NAOOZUBIKA MIN WA A-THAA-IS-SA-FA-RI WA KA-AA-BA-TIL MUN-QA-LA-BI WA SOO-IL MAN-ZA-RI FIL MAA-LI WAL AH-LI WAL WA-LAD O(Allah I seek Your protection from the hardships of this journey and disastrous return home and from observing any unpleasantness in my family, property, and children. Therefore, be particular, to beseech Allah at this time or the betterment of yourself, your family members, your relatives, your friends, your acquaintances, in this world as well as the Hereafter, and recite this du’aa particularly AL-LAA-HU AK-BAR O AL-LAA-HU AK-BAR O AL-LAA-HU AK-BAR O LAA-LAA-HA IL-LAL-LAA-HU WAL-LAA-HU AK-BAR O Allah is Most Great, Allah is Most Great Allah is Most Great. The first thing after reaching Makkah is to perform the Tawaat of Arrival (for persons performing Hajj-e-lfrad) or Umrah (for persons performing Haji-e- Tamatt’u). If you have to perform Umrah then observe Iztibah (to take one end of the Ahram’s upper sheet from under the right armpit and drop it over the left shoulder) and Ramal (to walk with hastened pace moving the shoulders, in the first three circumambulations) in Tawaaf if you are performing Umrah, then you also have to perform Sa’ee and Halaq (for persons performing Hajl-e  Tamattu) A S Sice: When you reach a bit to the left of HaJjar-o-Aswad, stay there and Intense for performing Tawaaf. The intention should be made in the following words BIS-MIL-LAA-HIR-RAH-MAA-NIR- RA-HEEM AL-LAA-HUM-MA IN-NEE UREE-DU TA-WAA-FA BAI-TI-KAL HA-RAA-M FA-YAS SIR-HU LEE WA TA-QAB- BAL-HU MIN-NEE SAB-A-TA ASH-WAA-TIN LIL-LAA-HI TA-AA- LAA AZ-ZA WA JAL In the name of Allah Most Gracious, Most Merciful. O, Allah! intend to perform Tawaat (of Hali or Umrah or only Tawaat) of Thy Sacred House. Hence ease it for me and accept it from me The Tawaat of seven circuits, for Almighty Allah the Dignified Alter intention move towards right and reach in front of the Hajjar o-Aswad and then raising the two hands up to ear- lobes say : In the name of Allah, If it is difficult to reach the Hajar-o Aswad without pushing other persons then raise the hands, palms facing Hajar-e Aswad and then kiss the two palms saying the above words. Then you walk slowly, calmly and humbly towards Baab-o-Ka’aba and Hateem all circuiting the Holy Ka’aba and reciting the prayers of praise and glory of Allah.
The Haj starts on 8th Zil Haj and ends on 12th Zil Haj of every Hijri year. These are known as the Five days of Hai Rites and functions performed during these five days are described here Hajj may be performed in three ways 1. IFRAD ie. Hajj alone 2 OIRAN i.e. Hajj and Umrah in one Ahram during the Haj season 3. TAMATTU ie. Haj and Umrah separately in two Ahrams during the Haj sed son It is necessary to make the intention clearly as to the type of Haj when putting on the Ahram because once you make an intention, you are not allowed to change it 8TH ZIL-HAJJ THE FIRST DAY It is called Yavm-e-Tarwiyya. If you are performing Qiran or Ifrad Hali. then you are already in Ahram, which you wore at Meeqaat. If you are performing Tamattu Haij and you have put off your Ahram after performing Umrah during Haj season, then you should again put on Ahram on 7th or 8th Zil Haji for Haj For this purpose take a bath, put on two white unsewn sheets, go to Haram Sharif and after offering two raka’at Naf of Ahram, make the intention for Ahram of Haj, It the time of Namaaz is makrooh, then the intention may be made after Farz Namaaz, without the Nati of Ahram H you want to perform the Saee of Haj before Vagoof of Arafa then perform a Nafl Tawaaf with Ramal and Iztibah and then perform Saee with the particular intention of Saee of Haij But to perform Section r SEPTEMBER 2013
the Saee of Hag atter the Tawaal of Ziyarat is better On this day, you leave Makkah tor Mina after sunise in the echoing atmosphere ot Lab-baik Al-laa-hum-ma Lab-baik You feel yourselt in, an angelic world, wave after wave of human races from al over the world fow and flood towards the barren plain ot Mina Speaking various dialects, they are all tolded in the Sa- ored dress Ahram and umer the Heav- enly call of Lab-bak This is the living miracie of the unity of slam. Reach Mina preterably in the torenoon and ofter tive Namaaz from Zuhar ot the 8th to Fajr of 9h Zi Ha The Namaaz should preterably be at- ended in Mas a-e-Khaif, in Mina whiere Allah’s Messenger (Salialahu Alaih Wa Sallami stayed and offered Namaaz But t you are atraid of losing your camp then offer the Namaaz with Jamaat in your camp The old and weak and women should not go out of the camp unnecessaniy, be- cause there are hundreds of lost cases every year When you go out of the camp, make sure that you have tne card of your Mualim. Devote your stay n Mina to prayers, Darood Shant and Astaglaar. Repent trom past sins and resolve timly to lead a pious lite accord- ng to the command of Alah the Alimighty and the Traditions of Aliah s Messenger (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam). 9TH ZIL HAJJ THE SECOND DAY It is called Yavm-e-Vagoof or Yaum-e- Arafa. This is the main day of Has You pack up your luggage for passing an afternoon in Arafat and night in the open plain of Muzdalifa 87 DIVINE PATH
One blanket, dry food, water-can and prayer booklets are the essentials of this journey. Start from Mina after sun- rise, preferably after offering Ishraq Namaaz in Masjid-e-Khait The distance from Mina to Arafat viaO Muzdalifa is about five miles which may be covered on foot, and that is better You can use a vehicle also. Reach Arafat before mid-day for Vaqoof, which is Sunnat. Take rest before noon in your camp. When Zawaal sets in, you may go to Masjid-e-Namrah, attend the Khutba, which is recited before the com- bined Namaaz of Zuhar and Asr. After the Khutba, two raka’at Zuhar Farz are offered with Jamaat and then the Imam leads the prayer for two raka’at Farz of Asr with another Takbeer If you are not going to Masjid-e-Namrah then offer the Zuhar and Asr Namaaz separately in your tent at their respec- tive times. As there are many chances of getting lost in Arafat, it is better to of- fer your prayers in your tent. From the Fajr Namaaz of 9th Zil Hajj till the Asr Namaaz of 13th Zil Haj, say takbeer after every Namaaz AL-LAA-HU AK-BAR AL-LAA-HU AK-BAR LA I-LAA-HA IL-LAL-LAA- HU WAL-LAA-HU AK-BAR AL-LAA HU AK-BAR WA-LIL-LAA-HIL-HAMD This is a very important day. Do not talk unnecessarily. Do lots of du’aa. Do Zikr. SEPTEMBER 2013
Recite the first, third and fourth Kalima. Recite 100 times Astagfaar, 100 times fourth Kalima, 100 times Darood-e Ibrahim, 100 times Surah Ikhlas with Bis-mil-lah Do lot of du’aa. In between du’aa recite Lab-baik. Halting and standing in Arafat is the fore- most Hajj rite, so much so that Allah’s Messenger (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) is reported to have said, “Haj is halting in Arafat. (Tirmizi Sharit) On this day when hundreds of thou- sands of people, clad in similar humble robes, stand in the plain of Arafat as pic- tures of humility and devotion, in the presence of Allah the Almighty, they in- deed, for a short while, represent the scene of the Day of Rising, when all worldly distinctions will be levelled down and everyone will be awaiting and standing in awe of the Divine Verdict If a person is not able to reach Arafat on the 9th of Zil Haj or any time during the day or night, and stand there even for a little while, he will not be considered to have performed Haij at all. If any of the other devotional acts like Tawaaf, Saee Rami, etc are missed, they can be rec- ompensed, but there is no recompense for one’s absence from Arafat The longer the halt in Arafat, the better it is. The pilgrim should stand there with the presence and remember that he is totally dependent on the Mercy of Allah for de- liverance, and that this is the only and perhaps the last opportunity for him to beg and implore Him for forgiveness. The pil- grim should therefore realise the impor tance of each moment of his stay in Arafat. Stressing the importance of excellence of halting in Arafat, Allah’s Messenger Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) has said, 88 DIVINE PATH
There is no other day on which Allah re- lieves more people from Hell-fire than He does on the Day of Arafat. On this day Allah draws nearest to the people and tak- ing pride in His righteous servants, asks the angels, “Do you see what they de- sire?” (Muslim Sharif) During the halt in the Plain of Arafat, one should constantly keep one’s whole at- tention turned towards Allah and make supplications to Him as often as one can. Allah’s Messenger (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) has said, “The best of suppli- cations is the one made in Arafat.” Start for Muzdalifa after sunset in Arafat
without offering the Magrib Namaaz. This will be offered with Isha Namaaz in Muzdalifa. If a person leaves Arafat ter- ritory before sunset, then a Dum is wajib on him and he should sacrifice one sheep or goat as a penalty. But if he re- turns before sunset, nothing is wajib. After keeping your baggage safely in Muzdalifa, offer the combined Magrib and Isha Namaaz with Jamaat, prefer- ably in Masjid Masharil Haraam. The blanket, dry food and water brought from Arafat is required in Muzdalifa as about a million people pass this night in the open and barren plain of Muzdalifa.
The Night of Masharil Haraam is a very virtuous night. Therefore pass this Night with full prayers and devotion. Practi- cally, the people reach Muzdalifa two or three hours after sunset. You may take rest for 2-3 hours after Isha Namaaz and then get up for Tahajjud and other prayers till the time of Fajr. When the time of Fajr starts, offer the Fajr and observe Vaqoof of Muzdalifa reciting Darood, Astagfaar and other prayers preferably near Jabal Qazah. The time limit of Vagoof of Muzdalifa is from dawn to sunrise on tenth of Zil Hajj. Do lots of du’aa. In between du’aa recite Lab-baik. You should start from Muzdalifa to Mina only when few minutes remain for sun- rise. To start before dawn from Muzdalifa
is not allowed except for old, weak per- sons and women, for fear of rush. Also collect from Muzdalifa approximately 70 pebbles so as to pelt (7+21 +21) 49 pea- sized pebbles for Rami Jamar 10TH ZIL HAJJ-THE THIRD DAY Start from Muzdalifa before sunrise and reach Mina in forenoon to perform the rites. After reaching Mina keep your baggage etc. safely in your camp and start to perform the rites, strictly in the following order. Without long rest in the camp, rush to strike seven pebbles on the third Jamrah known as Jamrat Al-Ugba (Big Shaitaan) before Zawaal. For ladies and weak per- sons, it is allowed to perform Rami up
Er to sunset, otherwise Makrooh. Throw the pebbles one by one, and raising the right hand. Discontinue the Talbiyah with the first pebble on Jamrah. Recite the following prayer when throwing each pebbles on the Jamrah: th BIS-MIL-LAA-HI AL-LAA-HU AK- BAR RA-GA-MAN LISH-SHAI-TAA-NI RI-DAN LIR-RAH-MAA-NI AL-LAA- HUM-MAJ-AL-HU HAJJ-JAM MAB- ROO-RAN WA SA’-YAM MASH-KOO-

Allah the Most Great, I strike the pebbles to Satan to secure the pleasure of Beneficent O my Lord Allah make my Haj accepted and my endeavour honoured and my sins forgiven ZABAH OR ANIMAL SACRIFICE After returning from Jamrah, go to Mazbah for sacrificing an animal. For a person (men or women) performing Tamattu or Qiran Haj, it is obligatory to sacrifice a sheep or goat or one-seventh share in a camel or bullock. It is Mustahab but not obligatory for persons performing Ifrad Haij. You can take the meat from your sac- rifice for your use, this is Sunnat. HALAQ After sacrifice you can put off the Ahram of Haj by Halaq, i.e. by shaving the head or shortening the hair as already de- scribed under Umrah. Women should cut
their lock about an inch to put off the Ahram. Now you are free of Ahram re- strictions and can use your normal dress and perfumes, etc. However, the husband2 wife relationship is still not allowed, un- less you perform Tawaaf-e-Ziyarat TAWAAF-E-ZIYARAT It is better to perform this Tawaaf on 10th Zil Hajj but it can be performed up to Magrib of 12th Zil Hajj. Go to Makkah Mukarrama on the 10th afternoon and perform a usual Tawaaf-e-Sadr. The hus- band-wife relationship is still not allowed until both of them have performed Tawaaf-e-Ziyarat. After Tawaaf-e-Sadr return from Makkah Mukarrama to pass at least two nights in Mina. This is a Sunnat. If you are still in Ahram, you should observe Iztibah and Ramal in Tawaaf of Ziyarat. If you have put off Ahram before coming to Makkah Mukarrama then Iztibah and Ramal are not required. SAEE OF HAJJ After Tawaaf of Ziyarat, perform a usual Saee with particular intention of Saee of Haji Saee may be performed without Ahram. In case you have completed Saee of Hajj before Vaqoof of Arafat then no Saee is required now. 11TH ZIL HAJJ -THE FOURTH DAY Devote the stay of Mina to praying and praising Allah. It is obligatory to pass the night of 10th and 11th Zil Haij in Mina and to perform Rami of the three Jamrat on 11th and 12th Zil Haj after Zawaal. For Rami, go to Jamrat with more than twenty-one pebbles. Strike seven pebbles on 1st Jamrah reciting the prayer mentioned before and then stay SEPTEMBER 2013
facing Ka’aba near it for five minutes praying for your welfare, then proceed to second Jamrah, strike seven pebbles and stay a few meter ahead from Jamrah for five minute prayer and then proceed to the last Jamrah i.e. Jamrat al-Uqbah, strike seven pebbles and return to your camp without staying or praying after it For ladies and old persons it is allowed to perform the Rami even after sunset on 11th and 12th Zil Hajj otherwise it is makrooh 12TH ZIL HAJJ-THE FIFTH DAY Perform the Rami of the three Jamrat af ter Zawaal as performed on 11th Zil Ha 13TH ZIL HAJJ To return to Makkah Mukarrama from Mina after the Rami of 12th is allowed but it is better to return after performing the Rami of 13th Zil Hajj in similar way If a person intends to leave Mina on 12th then he should leave it before sunset. Departure from Mina on 12th after sunset is makrooh. If a person stayed in Mina up to the dawn of 13th Zil Haij, then it is obligatory on him to per- form the Rami after Zawaal of 13th Zil Hajj THE LIMITATIONS The Rami on 10th should be performesd before Zawaal. It is Sunnat. It is also al- lowed from Zawaal to sunset. But it is makrooh after sunset and forbidden af ter the dawn of 11th. If a person could not perform the Rami of 10th up to the dawn of 11th then a blood sacrifice is due to him as a penalty, which is known as Dum. The time of Rami on 11th, 12th and 13th starts from Zawaal to sunset, from 92DIVINE PATH
sunset to next dawn it is makrooh and forbidden after the dawn of next day t a person could not perform it in the prescribed time, then a Dum is Wajib. NAHAR. The sacrifice of animal for Tamattu and Qiran Hajj should be performed from the dawn of 10th to the sunset of 12th Zil Haij, within the Haram territory preferably in Mina. If a person did it after this period or outside the Haram territory then a Dum will be Wajib HALAQ. The head shaving or hair g shortening should be performed from dawn of the 10th to the sunset of 12th within the Haram territory. Performing it after the prescribed period or outside the Haram territory will be subjected to a Dum.To perform Rami, Nahar and Halaq in the same order is also wajib. If a per son performed Halaq before Nahar or Rami after Halaq then a Dum will be wajib
AFTER HAJJ Return from Mina to Makkah Mukarrama on 12th or 13th afternoon. Now your Ha is complete. According to Hadis, who- soever performed Haij solely for Allah and did not resort to any lewdness or abuse, he returns from Hajj as innocent and sinless as he was on the day he was born. All your past sins are forgiven and you are like a newly born baby. You are entering into a new phase of life. You should not forget the Benevolence of Allah, Who selected you from among the millions of Muslims and honoured you with the visit of His Holy House, the Abode of Prophets. You should not for SEPTEMBER 2013
get the promises made by you in Arafat to lead a pious life. Now you are well aware of your responsibilities. If you will commit sins again, it will not only de- grade you but also reflect on the whole society. After Hajj you should devote your maximum time to prayers in Makkah Mukarrama. Nafl Umrah may be performed for your parents, relatives, teachers and off spring, dead or alive. in order to perform Nafl Umrah you have to perform Gusl then taking your Ahram you go to Masjid-e-Ayesha. There you put on the Ahram, offer two raka’at Nafl of Umrah and then come back to Haram Sharif and perfom Tawaaf (with Iztibah and Ramal), Saee and Halaq Make intention for Umrah in the follow- ing words AL-LAA-HUM-MA IN-NEE U-REE DUL UM-RAH O FA-YAS-SIR-HAA- LEE WA TA-QAB-BAL-HAA MIN- NEE O WA A-IN-NEE A-LAI-HAA WA BAA-RIK-LEE FEE-HAA NA- VAI-TUL UM-RA-TA WA AH-RAM- TU BI-HAA LIL-LAA-HI TA-AA- LAA O Allah !I have made the intention to perform Umrah, easen it for me and ac- 93 DIVINE PATH0
cept it from me and help me (to perform it) and make it full of blessings for me. I make the intention for Umrah and with itO I have put on the Ahram for the sake of Allah Ta’ala. Similarly, Nafl Tawaaf may be performed for them. At least one full recitation of Qur’aan may be completed during this period. Nafl Namaaz may also be offered for yourself. Be particular for five times Namaaz. (Do not forget that one Namaaz offered in Haram is equal to one hundred thousand Namaaz offered elsewhere) TAWAAF-E-VIDA OR FAREWELL TAWAAF When you decide finally to depart from Makkah Mukarrama and Haram, per- form a farewell Tawaaf with full devotion Tears will well up in your eyes when you think that the Haram, the Ka’aba Multazim, Maqaam-e-lbrahim and Zamzam will be lost to you forever. Now you will, be deprived of all this benevo- lence. Call Allah with tears in your eyes and sobbing voice at Multazim and say: Arafat
O my Lord! I am Thy humble servant. It is Thy sheer benevolence that Thou called me here. O my Lord! Call me here again and again. And record my these words today at this Sacred Place. That I proclaim with my full belief and con- science. And from the depth of my heart. My truth and the eternal truth. That there is none worthy of worship except Allah and Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) is His Messenger. O my Lord, record my these words with the witness of entire universe. When Allah had purified the Ka’bah from desecration and the idols were destroyed, the Muslims yearned to perform hajj again. The mission of the Messenger(sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) of Allah was also nearing completion and it was necessary for him to bid farewell to his loving Companions. So Allah gave permission to His Messenger(sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) to take them for hajj. It was the first hajj for him since he began his mission.
He left Madinah for many reasons: to perform hajj; to meet Muslims from far and near; to teach them their faith and its rituals; to bear witness to the truth; to hand over the trust; and to give his final instructions, He would administer an oath binding on the Muslims to follow his teachings and to be rid of the last traces of Jahiliyyah. More than a hundred thousand Muslims performed hajj with him. This is known as Hajjat al-Wada’ (the ‘Farewell Hajj’) and Hajjat al-Balagh (the Hajj of Conveying’).
Once the Messenger(sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) of Allah had decided to go on hajj he informed the people of his intention and they started to prepare for the journey.
When news of it spread outside Madinah, people flocked to the city wanting to go on hajj with the Messenger(sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) of Allah. Huge throngs also joined him on the way. The crowds stretched in front of him, behind him, and to his right and left as far as the eye could see. He left Madinah on Saturday, 25 Dhu’l-Qa’dahl after praying four rak’ats for Zuhr. Before the prayer, in a sermon, he explained the essentials of putting on ihram, the pilgrim dress, and the obligations and sunan of the hajj.
As he departed he said the talbiyah: ‘At Your service, O Allah, at Your service! You have no partner. At Your service! Praise and Blessing are Yours and the Kingdom. You have no associate.’ The crowd chanted the talbiyah along with him as they continued their journey
He entered Makkah on 4 Dhu’l-Hijjah and went straight to the Masjid al-Haram. He performed tawaf of the Ka’bah and the sa’y between Safa and Marwah. He stayed in Makkah for four days and then on the Day of Tarwiyah, 8 Dhu’l-Hjjiah, he made for Mina with his Companions He prayed Zuhr and ‘Asr there and spent the night.
At sunrise on 9 Dhu’l-Hijjah, he left Mina and made for Arafat followed by all the pilgrims. It was a Friday. Down in the valley, he delivered a great khutbah to the people while seated on his camel. He confirmed the principles of Islam and struck at the roots of idolworship and jahiliyyah. He commanded the people to treat as inviolable and sacrosanct those issues on which all religions agree life, property, and honour.
He declared that all the customs of Jahiliyyah were trampled under foot and that all usury was eliminated and made void. He commanded that people treat women well and he mentioned the rights men have over women and those which women have over men, adding that it was obligatory to provide food and clothing for them.
He commanded his community to hold fast to the Book of Allah; as long as they did this they would not be misguided, he said. Finally, he told them that on the Day of Judgement Allah would ask them about him. He asked them to bear witness that he had conveyed to them the message as he had been commanded.
They replied as one voice, ‘We testify that you have conveyed the message and that you have fulfilled your task.
He pointed to the sky and called on Allah three times to bear witness to it. Then he commanded those Present to convey the message to those who were absent.
When the khutbah was over, he called on Bilal to give the adhan. Then the iqamah was given and he prayed Zuhr with two rak’ats and after the iqamah for ‘Asr had been given he prayed that, too, with two rak’ats.
When he had finished the prayers, he mounted his camel and rode until he came to Mawqif, the halting place at Arafat. Remaining on his camel, he made supplication, prayed and glorified Allah until sunset. In his supplication he raised his hands to his chest, like a pauper begging for food, and pleaded,
O Allah, You hear my words and You see where I am. You know my secrets and what I reveal. Nothing can be hidden from You. I am the poor unfortunate who seeks help and protection. I am fearful and apprehensive, confessing and acknowledging my wrong actions.
I ask You as a poor wretch asks and I entreat You with the entreaty of a humble, sinful person. I make supplication to You as a fearful, blind person does; one who bows low before You and whose eyes overflow with tears for You, whose body is humble and who is powerless against You. O Allah, do not make me despair in my calling on You, Lord. Be merciful and compassionate; to me, O best of those who are asked and best of` givers!
Then it was revealed to him: ‘Today I have perfected your religion for you, and I have completed My blessing on you, and I have approved Islam for your religion.'(5: 3)
At sunset, the Messenger(sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) of Allah moved from ‘Arafat to Muzdalifah. There he prayed Maghrib and ‘Isha’ and then slept until morning. At dawn he prayed Fajr for its first time then rode until he came to the Mash’ar al-Haram the sacred site at Muzdalifah. He faced the qiblah and began to make supplications. He recited the takbir (‘Allah is great’) and the tahlil (‘There is no god but Allah’). He left Muzdalifah before sunrise and travelled quickly to the jamrat al-Aqabah at Mina, and threw pebbles at this symbol of Shaytan.
He delivered a meaningful sermon in Mina in which he informed the Muslims of the sanctity of the Day of Sacrifice, of its inviolability and its favour with Allah. He also reminded them of the sanctity of Makkah over all other cities. He commanded them to obey their leaders according to the Book of Allah; to adopt the hajj practices he had used; and not to revert to being unbelievers after his time or to start fighting amongst themselves. He commanded that they pass on his words. ‘Worship your Lord, pray your five prayers, fast your month, and obey the One in command and you will enter the Garden of your Lord, ‘ he said. Then he bade the people farewell. Thus this hajj was named ‘The Hajj of’ Farewell.’
Next, the Messenger(sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) of Allah went to the place of sacrifice at Mina and sacrificed sixty-three camels, one for each year of his life. He commanded Ali to sacrifice the rest of the hundred camels brought from Madinah. When the prophet had finished making the sacrifice, he called for the barber and had his head shaved. He divided his hair between those who were near him. Then he rode to Makkah and performed tawafal-Ifadah, which is also called tawaf az-Ziarah. At the well of Zamzam he drank while standing before returning to Mina that same day where he spent the night. The next morning he waited until the sun had declined before going to perform the ritual stoning of Shaytan. He started with the stoning of Jamrat-al-‘Ula, then of Jamrat-al-Wusta and lastly of Jamrat-al-Aqabah. This was repeated over the three days of ayyam at-Tashriq following the Day of Sacrifice.
After the three days of Tashriq, he went to Makkah and performed the tawaf of Farewell before dawn. Then he asked his Companions to prepare for their departure to Madinah. On their return journey they stayed the night at Dhu’l-Hulayfah.
When he first saw Madinah on his return from Makkah, he recited the takbir three times and then said,
There is no god but Allah, alone with no partner. His is the kingdom and His is the praise. He has power over all things. We are returning, repenting, worshipping, prostrating to our Lord, and praising Him. Allah has been true to His promise and has helped His slave and defeated the enemies alone.’
He entered Madinah in broad daylight.
