How do i change the default icon library in windows 10

Hi friends, so today let’s see how to change the default library icons in the “This PC” option of Windows 10. Once you get into “This PC” option, you can see a list of library folders, for which the icons cannot be just changed by using a right click and going into the properties and customization. It’s not that easy here, but still, we can do this by using the system registry editor, instead of installing a third-party software that could bring you some additional ads or consume your ram space. So right now we are going to do our edit.

Download Icon Files Before that we have to download some of the icon files. These are the files which are available in internet They have an extension of “.ico”. I have downloaded such files and have kept it in the “icons” folder in my desktop. You can keep these files anywhere in your computer. We are moving to our procedure now.

STEP 1: Type “regedit” on the search bar of your taskbar. Once you type “regedit”, it will open the run command for registry editor. Then hit on “Enter” key. Now the registry editor will be opened in Windows. Registry Editor In the registry editor there will be an address bar which is available on top of the registry editor. To that address bar we are going to paste the path to the particular registry keys which contains the folder icons of the default library folders. For example, Here, in “This PC” let’s change the folder icon of “3d objects”. The folder of “3d objects” is taking its icon from a particular register key. The path to that key have beeen mentioned in the video description below. From video description, choose that path. Just select on that path corresponding to 3d object.

STEP 2: Select the complete path right click on it. Click on copy and then paste that complete path inside the address bar of registry editor. So right click on it and click on paste and Press on “Enter” key. Now, that has opened the registry key of that particular path. So inside that registry key there is a default icon folder. Click on that folder. Then it will open up a string that has a data that data point towards the location of the system files from where the folder icon has been taken by default. So double click on it and change the value data to new folder icon location. How can we select new folder icon path from our folders? It’s pretty simple. Go back to our icons folder in the desktop or wherever it is and select the icon for which we have to make the customization. Then press the “Shift” button on your keyboard. By pressing the shift button, right click on this icon. It will give you an additional option in the right click menu, that is, “copy as path”. Click on the “copy as path” and now come back to registry editor select the value data completely, right click on it and paste

STEP 3: Our new icon location is here and click on Ok. In some cases, Windows 10 may not allow you to edit these default values. in order to get the permission for that,

STEP 4: Right click on the default icon and click on permissions. A new dialog box will come, in the dialog box you want to click on “Advanced”. From Advanced “change the owner” of this folder Click the “Change” button and type “Everyone”. Let everyone in the computer can get access to it. click on “Check Names”. Click on Ok. Click on Ok here. Now everyone has been assigned as the owner of this folder. Next we have to assign some of the permission to “Everyone”. For that, click on “Add” button then type “Everyone” again as you have done before. Then click on **”Check Names”**and click on Ok. Now everyone has been listed out in the “group or users name”. Click “Everyone” and check the “checkbox” to give them full control. After that click on “Apply” and click on “Ok”.So now, our strings can be edited. Double click on string as before and select the complete value data and

STEP 5: paste our folder path to this particular dialog box under **”validate”**and click on Ok. Now the folder icon should be updated in the “This PC” option. Let’s go and check. Oh No! The folder icons haven’t been updated. This is because we have to refresh it. Right click and “Refresh” it. Now the folder icons have been updated successfully. If in your case, this right click and “Refresh” doesn’t work, then just log off from this system and log in again or you can restart the “File Explorer” process manually, so that, the folder icons will be updated. This is the process to change the folder icons. To bring it back to its default icon, I have given the description of the default icon locations of these corresponding folders in this video description. You can just choose that default location from that description and copy it paste it inside this same string value. Click on Ok. Now the default folder icon should have been replaced. Just click on “Refresh” your window and you can see that, the default folder icon has came back. So this is the method which can be adopted very easily and quickly to customize your library folder icons in Windows 10. Thank you for reading.
